Reports to R&D Director

Job Overview

The R&D Chemist — Home Care develops and supports laundry care, household cleaning, and air-freshening products in our R&D lab. You’ll work closely with product development, process engineering, regulatory, and quality — running chemical and physical testing on lab batches, finished goods, and prototype formulas for product and process development, stability, and performance analysis. This is an onsite role.

Responsibilities & Duties

  • Formulate and batch laundry care (liquid detergents, fabric softeners), household cleaning (surface sprays, dish care), and air-freshening products (room sprays, diffuser oils, linen mists) from client briefs — adhering to customer no-lists and global retailer requirements.

  • Conduct chemical and physical lab testing on lab batches, finished goods, and prototypes; manage reformulations in response to customer direction.

  • Prepare submission paperwork (Sample Submission Sheet, CoA) and labels; adjust batches and validate specifications.

  • Support process engineering and scale-up from lab batch to pilot and production; oversee initial production batches.

  • Provide technical support to customers, product development managers, process engineers, compounders, and the quality unit.

  • Maintain accurate, real-time formula entries and troubleshoot formulation and process issues.

  • Calibrate R&D lab equipment and assist with audits and general lab functions.

  • Uphold Good Laboratory Practices (GLPs), cGMPs, SOPs, and all health, safety, and environmental procedures.

Qualifications

  • B.S. in Chemical Engineering, Organic Chemistry, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or a related science (required).

  • Minimum 5 years in a Chemist role in HI&I (household, industrial & institutional) consumer products.

  • Knowledge of rules and regulations relevant to global home-care formulation.

  • Formulation experience across laundry (liquid, unit-dose), fabric care, household surface cleaners, dish care, and air fresheners — including natural/clean formulations and reverse engineering (a plus).

  • Strong technical foundation in surfactant systems, builders, enzymes, emulsions, and suspensions (preferred).

  • Strong computer skills; detail-oriented, with strong time-management and multitasking abilities.

  • Able to lift 25 lbs and stand, walk, and sit for extended periods.

Work Environment

  • Laboratory and process-manufacturing environment; low-to-moderate noise, with proper lighting and ventilation.

  • Flexibility to work longer hours during peak season or on special schedules as needed.
